India official takes blame in deadly poll violence

GAUHATI, India (AP) — The chief minister of India’s northeastern Assam state is taking responsibility for violence that killed 19 people during local elections.

Tarun Gogoi told reporters Wednesday that it was his responsibility to provide security for the area.

Nineteen people were killed Tuesday when a local tribe protested against the village council elections, fearing the government was infringing on its autonomy.

Gogoi said 13 of the victims were killed by police firing at violent protesters and another six were killed in clashes between protesters and counter-protesters. In addition, 300 houses were burned down.
