Elite Hawaii runners will compete in Hapalua’s Chase
Twenty-four of Hawaii’s elite runners will challenge marathon world record holder Patrick Makau and two other top Kenyan runners in The Chase portion of the Hapalua half-marathon on March 10.
Team Hawaii, comprised of 12 men and 12 women, will be given a head start over the Kenyans who then will "chase" the 24 over the 13.1-mile course that begins and ends in Waikiki.
The men named to Team Hawaii are Jonathan Lyau, Andrew Taylor, Mark Speck, Todd Iacovelli, Nathan Carlson and Mathew Holton. Also, Jason Braswell, Tim Marr, Joel Harris, Tyler Hubbard, Allen Wagner and Stephen Marthy.
The female members are Natalla Kravchuk, Kim Kuehnert, Mariane Uehara, Julia Ehses and Katherine Nichols. Also, Bree Wee, Cindy Anderson, Rachel Ross, Brigitta Egbert, Polina Babkina and Susie Stephen.
Online registration for individuals and relay teams is available at thehapalua.com. Some teams are using the race as a fundraiser and offer discounted entry fees in return for help in fundraising.
The fee for Hawaii residents is $80 through March 3. The late entry fee is $135 from March 4 through packet pick-up on March 9 at the Hawaii Convention Center.

Archery tournament Saturday
The Aloha State Archery Association is hosting a tournament Saturday at the Waipio Archery Range at Central Oahu Regional Park.
Registration and bow check is from 7-8:30 a.m., with competition starting at 9 a.m. Archers will shoot 90 arrows, 30 each over three distances, with divisions ranging from 11-and-under through 18-and-over.

Aloha Beach Volleyball clinics starting
Free youth clinics again are being offered by Aloha Beach Volleyball on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month at Maili Beach Park.
The clinics, open to all ages and levels of experience, run from 8:30 a.m. through 11:30 a.m. Adults are welcome.
This season, ABV has partnered with i9 Sports Honolulu, which will offer flag football, soccer and T-ball baseball activities on the fourth Saturdays, including this Saturday’s session.

Coed volleyball tourney seeks teams
Several openings remain for Saturday’s Paulele Volleyball Cub’s coed adult tournament at the Pearl City High gym.
The event is a fundraiser for the club to send its 12s team to the Ho‘oikaika Tournament on Kauai. Entry fee is $80, with the winning team receiving $100. Check-in is at 4:30 p.m., with play starting at 4:45 p.m.

Kanaka Ikaika season continues
Zsolt Szadobszki looks to extend his surf ski winning streak to five at Saturday’s Outrigger Zone Kailua Bay Challenge, the fifth event of the Kanaka Ikaika Racing Association.
Due to weather conditions, the course tentatively has been changed to run within Kailua Bay with laps around buoys. Should conditions improve, the course will move outside the reef.
Registration is at Pinky’s Pupu Bar & Grill beginning at 7 a.m. Racing in OC6, OC3, OC2, OC1, surf ski, SUP, prone paddleboard and V1 begins at 10 a.m.

8 Hawaii hockey teams win medals
Eight teams from the Kapolei Inline Hockey Arenas won medals at the North American Roller Hockey Championships’ West Coast Winternationals in January in San Jose, Calif.
KIHA won two gold medals (12 and under, 18U) and five silver medals (8U, 14U, 16U, 21U and Over 35) in Silver Division competition.
The KIHA men’s team played in the Gold Division and won a silver medal.
