The University of Hawaii women’s track and field team set two school records and recorded 12 personal bests in its first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Indoor Championship meet on Friday in Seattle.
Junior Amanda Alvarez broke UH pentathlon event records in the 60-meter hurdles (8.82 seconds) and the long jump (18 feet, 5 1/4 inches), however she did not complete the pentathlon due to a conflict with other events. Senior Samantha Balentine placed fifth for the Rainbow Wahine with 3,809 points and tied for the meet’s best high jump mark at 5-8 3/4.
Sophomore Zhane Santiago qualified for the 60-meter hurdle final and set a personal best in the long jump. She improved her previous best by nearly 8 inches with a jump of 18-10 to finish sixth.
The meet concludes today.
Meanwhile, the UH swimming and diving teams concluded day two of the MPSF Championships at East Los Angeles College (swimming) and the Air Force Academy (diving).
The Rainbow Wahine are in second place with 429 points, nine behind UC Davis. Sophomore Jasmine Alkhaldi scored in the 200 freestyle with a third-place finish of 1:48.72, while senior Rachel Cote was runner-up in the 100 backstroke (54.20). UH freshman Aimee Harrison won the 3-meter dive with a score of 324.00, with sophomore Lauran Hall finishing third at 298.00.
The Rainbow Warriors are in sixth place with 226.5 points. Senior Luca Mazzurana led the team with a second-place finish in the 100 butterfly (47.62).
