CONSULAR CORPS BALL | 1. Hawaii Chief Justice Mark Recktenwald, center, talked with newly installed Consular Corps of Hawaii officers M. Jan Rumi, honorary consul of Morocco, left, Jeffrey Daniel Lau, honorary consul of Belgium, Scott Dewar, consul general of Australia, and Kusuma Cooray, honorary consul of Sri Lanka, at the Consular Corps Inaugural Ball Feb. 9 at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. The gala black-tie event marked the start of Dewar's one-year term as dean of the corps. Cooray served as dean in 2012; Lau, this year's vice dean, will assume the office in 2014.

5. Charlie Fasi, left, his grandmother Joyce Fasi, retired Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Hank Stackpole and his wife, Vivien Stackpole, arrived early enough to catch Consul Corps associate member Fred Hellekes overseeing the preparations in "casual" attire. Hank Stackpole received the group's Distinguished Service Medal in 2010 for his contributions to improving international relations.

4. Emcee and retired Adm. R.J. "Zap" Zlatoper, honorary consul of Slovenia, left, and his wife, Barry Zlatoper, welcomed Jean Ariyoshi and former Gov. George Ariyoshi. Zlatoper announced he would preside over the program with the same punctuality expected when commanding a carrier group -- and he kept his word. Everything took place on schedule, and almost all the speeches were short and to the point.

3. Patricia Lee, honorary consul of France, second from left, and her husband, Dr. Worldster Lee, left, caught up with J. Hans Strasser, honorary consul general of Austria, and his wife, Marie Claire Strasser. Lee served as dean in 2010. Strasser received the 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award last year.

2. John Henry Felix, honorary consul general of Spain and Portugal, center, was congratulated by Danny Kaleikini, left, Linda Wong, Gov. Neil Abercrombie and Lennie Sorenson after he received the Consular Corps of Hawaii 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award. In presenting the award to Felix, Abercrombie said, "If there has been anybody in my lifetime ... who has exemplified the meaning of the phrase 'service to others,' who lives the aloha spirit every day of his life, it's John Henry Felix."
