Hawaii County police are investigating the death of an infant as a coroner’s inquest.

At 5:44 a.m. Monday, Kona patrol officers responded to a home on the 74-4000 block of Mamalahoa Highway in Holualoa to a report of an unresponsive baby girl.

A woman reported that she had found her 2-month-old baby in bed unresponsive, police said.

The mother had called 911 and had been instructed to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation until Fire Department rescue personnel arrived. Fire Department personnel then continued resuscitation efforts and took the baby to Kona Community Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 6:22 a.m.

Police do not suspect foul play. They have ordered an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
