Hawaii Pacific sinks Chaminade in hoops
Junior guard Skye Savini finished with 18 points and four rebounds to lift the Hawaii Pacific women’s basketball team over Chaminade 83-56 at McCabe Gym on Saturday.
With the win, the Sea Warriors clinched the top seed in the Pacific West Conference tournament.
HPU’s Melody Ladrido added 12 points and three assists. Rhani Kaneaiakala led Chaminade with 16 points.
The Sea Warriors (18-6, 14-4 PacWest) made 17 steals in their fifth consecutive win, while the Silverswords (1-22, 1-17 PacWest) continued their 17-game losing streak.
Hawaii Hilo sweeps HPU in softball
Rebecca Lee hit a two-run double in the top of the seventh inning to push Hawaii Hilo past Hawaii Pacific 4-3 for a softball doubleheader sweep Saturday at Okita Field.
Lee went 3-for-4 with three doubles and three RBIs in the second game for the Vulcans (12-10, 2-1 Pacific West Conference). Lee also played a big part in a 6-4 victory in the opener by going 2-for-2 with an RBI.
Pitcher Vanessa Salinas improved to 4-1, scattering 10 hits in the complete-game victory.
Caira Pires went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for the Sea Warriors (6-3, 0-1) in the first game.
BYUH softball team sweeps Swords
The Brigham Young-Hawaii women’s softball team defeated Chaminade 5-0 and 4-2 in a Pacific West Conference doubleheader Saturday in Laie.
In the first game, senior Haley Sones blasted a homer in the fourth inning to secure the win for the Seasiders (4-12, 2-0 PacWest). Tiffanee Frampton pitched seven innings for the win and also led the offense with three hits and two RBIs.
Gabrielle Hawkins struck out four batters in the nightcap for the Seasiders, while Kaitlyn Watanabe recorded the loss for Chaminade (3-7, 0-2 PacWest).
Vulcans in eighth place in shootout
Hawaii Hilo’s Nyssa Aoki shot a 7-over 79 on Saturday and is tied for 10th place in the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout in Vallejo, Calif.
The Vulcans are in eighth place out of 11 teams, 24 shots out of first place. Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State East Bay are tied for the tournament lead at 315.
Quarterback Club invites Sigall, Vaughn
Hawaii Pacific University marketing professor Bob Sigall and Dr. Carole Spangler Vaughn will speak at the Honolulu Quarterback Club’s luncheon at Maple Garden restaurant on Monday. Sigall will discuss the naming of the University of Hawaii’s athletic teams, while Vaughn will explain stem cells’ impact on sports medicine. The public is welcome to attend at 11:30 a.m. for $15 per person.
