The Hawaii volleyball team could not catch a spring break in falling in four sets to California Baptist on Friday night in the Van Dyne Gym.
The Lancers were out of session because of spring break and the Warriors were out of system because of breakdowns in the serve-and-pass game.
The Warriors lost 25-19, 24-26, 25-19, 25-22 despite an advantage in hitting accuracy (.268 to .260) and blocking (14.5 to 5) because they struggled to consistently place and pass serves in.
“Those are the most important things always,” UH coach Charlie Wade said.
Cal Baptist coach Wes Schneider said: “I think that’s all it was. Everything else seemed pretty balanced.”
Outside hitter Levi Cabral blasted six of the Lancers’ 10 aces. Opposite Aaron McCalmont added three aces.
The teams meet again tonight.
The Warriors entered as one of the nation’s best serving teams. But outside hitter JP Marks and opposite Brook Sedore each relinquished seven points on service miscues. Sedore put into play only four of his 11 serves for a dismal accuracy of 36.4 percent. Marks’ serving efficiency was .650.
In contrast, the Lancers put into play 86.7 percent of their serves.
“Obviously, 22 service errors is not good by anyone’s standards,” Wade said. “Brook and JP had 14 of them. Those two guys really struggled, and both those guys have been really good for us all year.”
Marks also had a difficult night with his passing.
“They targeted JP early and often with their serves,” said Wade, referring to Marks’ seven receiving errors. “He just couldn’t get his feet going. It was like he was falling over. We tried Jace (Olsen) a little bit (in Marks’ place), and he wasn’t much better. He muffed a couple. We just gave up too many mistakes, too many of all kinds of variety.”
The Lancers, meanwhile, were able to weather several challenges.
“We’re working at trying to be consistent,” Schneider said. “If we’re losing points, we try to regain them. It’s slowly becoming more and more consistent.”
Schneider said the Lancers are adjusting to the schedule of their inaugural Mountain Pacific Sports Federation season.
“Consistency-wise, you have to stay up for every match,” Schneider said. “If you’re in the MPSF, you don’t get an easy day. We’re learning how to be consistent over time.”
The Lancers were an NAIA powerhouse before applying for NCAA membership. This is their third — and final — year as a transitional program.
The Lancers are eligible to compete for the regular-season title, but they are not allowed to participate in the eight-team MPSF playoffs. The Lancers, who improved to 6-9 in the MPSF, moved ahead of the Warriors (6-11) and into ninth place. The Lancers’ standing, though, has no bearing on the Warriors’ playoff push.
Siki Zarkovic led the Warriors with 13 kills.
Guilherme Koepp had 16 kills for the Lancers.
