Eggens captures Big West weekly honor
Monika Eggens’ return from the Canadian national team continues to pay dividends for the University of Hawaii. The Rainbow Wahine senioris the Big West women’s water polo player of the week after helping eighth-ranked UH win its first two conference matches. It is Eggens’ second award this season.
Eggens scored three goals in the Wahine’s win over BWC defending champion and then-sixth-ranked UC Irvine. She added six in a win over ninth-ranked Long Beach State the next day.
At the Aztec Invitational, Eggens led the Wahine with 10 goals in three matches, including another six-goal night against Bucknell.
The attacker from Pitt Meadows, British Columbia, collected 19 goals in five matches over the weekend, upping her season total to 52 in 17 trips in the pool. Eggens ranks second in career goals at UH, with 203 — 35 behind Kelly Mason.
The Wahine host top-ranked USC in a nonconference match Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
Grand Canyon takes 2 from BYUH
Kelsey Barak connected for three hits and drove in two runs to lead Grand Canyon to a 15-6 victory in the first game of a Pacific West Conference softball doubleheader sweep of Brigham Young-Hawaii in Laie on Wednesday.
Nicole Newbury also drove in two runs for the Antelopes.
Tiffannee Frampton went 2-for-4 with three RBIs to lead the Seasiders.
In the second game, Kailey Regester pitched seven innings of two-hit relief in a 9-0 victory for the Antelopes (24-9, 12-4). Starting pitcher Nicole Upshaw was moved to designated hitter before facing a batter. Frampton and Brandy Karl had the only hits for BYUH (5-23, 2-10).
Grand Canyon sweeps Hawaii Pacific
Steven Swingle hit an RBI triple in the top of the 10th inning and Garrett Jeffries added a sacrifice fly to break a 4-4 tie and push Grand Canyon to a 6-5 victory over Hawaii Pacific in the first game of a Pacific West Conference baseball doubleheader sweep at Hans L’Orange Park on Wednesday night.
The Sea Warriors (17-7, 8-4) fought back with a run in the bottom of the 10th, but its rally fell short.
Swingle finished the game 3-for-4 with three RBIs for the Antelopes (18-5, 14-1).
Marvin Campbell went 4-for-5 with three RBIs for HPU.
Grand Canyon won the second game 3-1.
