Makeover set for Royal Hawaiian Center garden

Royal Hawaiian Center plans to redo its central garden area created five years ago during a $115 million renovation to Waikiki’s largest shopping center.

The mall announced plans Thursday to add wider walkways, two ponds with lit fountains, a new performance stage, new landscaping and signs that tell stories about Hawaiian cultural and historical subjects, including Waikiki place names and mall owner Kamehameha Schools.

An expanded cultural and guest center is also part of upgrading the 30,000-square-foot area between Kalakaua Avenue and the Royal Hawaiian Hotel.

The project is slated to take five months and begin on Monday.
