Homeless man charged with copper theft
A 24-year-old homeless man has been charged with allegedly stealing three lengths of copper pipe, valued at $15, late Saturday night from a Wakiki hotel, according to court documents.
Jonathan Williams entered a plea of not guilty Monday in District Court on a charge of theft of copper from the Hilton Waikiki Prince Kuhio Hotel. Taken were three copper pipes, each about 7 feet long and weighing 5 pounds. Bail for Williams was set at $11,000.
In a police affidavit a security guard said he saw Williams with a 27-year-old woman loading the pipes onto a white moped on the ninth floor of the hotel’s parking lot. When the security guard asked Williams how he got the pipes, Williams and the woman fled.
Williams and the woman were located at about 1:40 a.m. a block away on Liliuokalani Avenue, where they were identified and arrested on suspicion of theft. Prosecutors declined to charge the woman.
