Before being recognized during Cal Poly’s postgame festivities, the University of Hawaii softball team’s senior class helped the Rainbow Wahine finish off a series sweep over the Mustangs.
Senior shortstop Jessica Iwata drove in two runs, and Kaia Parnaby earned her third complete-game win of the weekend in UH’s 2-1 victory over Cal Poly in the series finale Saturday in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
After playing its final home game of the season, Cal Poly included UH in its senior day ceremony.
"They honored our five seniors and I really appreciated that," UH coach Bob Coolen said.
No. 15/20 UH improved to 37-8 overall and 14-1 in Big West play to remain atop the conference standings while closing an 11-day road trip. The Wahine went 6-1 during their stay in California and have won 17 of their last 18 games.
"An 11-day road trip, you sort of run out of gas a little bit, and we were resilient enough to play well," Coolen said.
"We had enough in the tank to get the job done, and that’s what we were hoping for because Cal Poly is pretty tough at home."
Iwata went 3-for-3 and gave UH the lead with an RBI single in the top of the first inning. Cal Poly tied the score in the bottom of the inning, and Iwata struck again in the third with a single to score fellow senior Kelly Majam from second with the go-ahead run.
"Cal Poly’s field is not a home run field," Coolen said. "We were fortunate to get a couple of home runs (Friday), but the wind blows in, their field is big and you have to manufacture runs, and that’s what we did.
"Jess hit the ball well today. We were setting the table early and Jess came through."
One day after breaking UH’s single-season wins record, Parnaby allowed four hits, struck out three and walked one while raising her record to 34-4. She moved within a win of tying the Big West record set by Cal Poly’s Rhonda Wheatley in 1987.
Coolen said the Mustangs tried to use the short game against Parnaby, and credited first baseman Leisha Li‘ili‘i and third baseman Kaile Nakao for helping stifle the Mustangs’ comeback attempts. Cal Poly put the tying run on base in each of the last three innings but couldn’t break through against Parnaby.
"They responded because (Cal Poly) kept bunting and we kept making the plays," Coolen said.
The Wahine are scheduled to return to Honolulu tonight and open a three-game home series with Long Beach State, now second in the Big West, on Friday.
