Junior PJ Samiere led the way with a 6-under-par 65 Tuesday, helping Punahou take a 13-shot lead after the first round of the David S. Ishii Foundation/HHSAA Boys Golf State Championships.
The Buffanblu will try to hold on for their fourth title in seven years in today’s final round.
Samiere, the Interscholastic League of Honolulu champ, scorched the Royal Kaanapali course for seven birdies. He had five 3s on the last six holes.
That is good enough for a three-shot advantage over defending champ John Oda, a Moanalua junior, and Mid-Pacific senior Skye Inakoshi.
Punahou shot a team total of 5-under 279 (best four scores of five). Moanalua is second, four shots ahead of MPI. Those are the only teams that broke 300.
Last year, Na Menehune became the first Oahu Interscholastic Association team since 1980 to win a boys golf championship.
Punahou’s four scorers are all in the top seven. Senior Kalena Preus (69) is alone in fourth, followed by Moanalua’s Brent Grant (70) and Punahou’s Ryan Lloyd (71). Zachary Braunthal, another Buffanblu senior, has a share of seventh at 74.
Golfers tee off starting at 6:30 a.m. today, with Samiere, Oda, Inakoshi and Baldwin’s Ariel Elftman-Hanson (74) going out last at 10:20.
