Agencies end search for man
The Coast Guard and Hawaii Fire Department have suspended a search for a 62-year-old Honokaa man last seen Monday evening in Waipio Valley, where he reportedly was going for a swim.
The Coast Guard announced Thursday night that it had searched more than 3,750 square miles. The Hawaii Fire Department searched by air, sea and shore, the Coast Guard said.
The Coast Guard identified the man as John Spillane. Hawaii County police said the missing man is Kevin Devlin, also known as Shawn Devlin. Both agencies released photos of the same man.
Spillane or Devlin is described as 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighing 160 pounds, with short, thin white hair.
Firefighters said they found the campsite undisturbed with the man’s items neatly stacked near the shore.
Police will continue to conduct a missing-persons investigation. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call the police nonemergency line at 935-3311. Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call CrimeStoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona. All CrimeStoppers information is kept confidential.
