The state land department reminds boaters and other recreational users that the alcohol ban at the Ahu o Laka sandbar in Kaneohe Bay will take effect today and will be enforced through Monday.
The liquor ban during three-day weekends first went into effect last year, in the wake of the death of a 26-year-old man who was involved in a fight at Heeia Kea Small Boat Harbor two years ago. It prohibits the possession, use or consumption of alcohol; loud, abusive or disorderly conduct; the presence of persons under the influence of alcohol; and narcotics or nonprescription drugs.
The new rule establishes a rectangular safety zone in the middle of Kaneohe Bay that is just larger than a square mile, making up the majority of the sandbar and defined by six marker buoys. Provisions of the rule are meant to protect the public while visiting Ahu o Laka on three designated holiday weekends during the summer: Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day, including any three-day weekend associated with these holidays.
Violators may be subject to a maximum fine of $1,000, or $50 for each violation, in addition to administrative fines, fees, costs and damages.
