Hawaii-based Outrigger Hotels and Resorts has purchased the Mövenpick Resort and Spa Mauritius from Dubai-based Kingdom Hotel Investments for an undisclosed price.
The deal, which closed on Wednesday, marks the locally owned company’s first foray into the Indian Ocean and is in keeping with its increasingly global strategy.
The late Roy and Estelle Kelley launched the still-family-owned empire in 1947 with the opening of The Islander, a four-story Waikiki walk-up. However, since 2008, their heirs have been steadily diversifying into the Asia-Pacific. With this most recent addition, Outrigger operates or has under development 46 properties with about 11,181 rooms in Hawaii, Mauritius, Australia, Guam, Fiji, Bali, Thailand, Vietnam, and Hainan Island, China. The company also operates and develops hotel properties and hospitality-related retail and real estate opportunities for partners in Hawaii, the Pacific and Asia.
“Our acquisition of this beautiful, absolute beachfront property in the south of Mauritius fits perfectly with our expansion strategies,” David Carey, president and CEO of Outrigger Enterprises Group, said in a news release. “We plan to have Outrigger resorts in the best beachfront locations in the best resort destinations in the Asia-Pacific region.”
Outrigger’s plan for the property includes an extensive six-month renovation of all 181 guest rooms as well as the resort’s grounds and public areas. The property, which closed for renovations on Wednesday, is expected to reopen by the end of the year as the Outrigger Mauritius Resort and Spa.
