The Honolulu Weekly plans to stop publishing today and resume in the fall.
The break in publication is due to "financial reasons," according to a posting on the Weekly’s Facebook page.
Editor Mindy Pennybacker confirmed the June 5 food issue will be the last until the Weekly reassesses its options.
Weekly publisher Laurie Carlson, who started the weekly 22 years ago, was unavailable for comment.
Pennybacker said Carlson has an explanation in the issue that will be on the newsstands today.
The Weekly, described by supporters as socially progressive, has served as an alternative voice.
"It’s a loss to our community, and we’re looking forward to them getting back on their feet," said Ikaika Hussey, publisher of the online news magazine Hawaii Independent.
"The Weekly represents a strong alternative voice, which we need."
Ian Lind, a former Honolulu Star-Bulletin investigative reporter who now writes a daily blog at Ilind.net, said the Weekly has been seeking to raise money to support its publication for some time.
"I guess it’s not a complete surprise," he said.
"What a loss of diversity in the marketplace of ideas. … With all types of news media imploding, it’s just one more sad step."
The Weekly has featured investigative reporting, feature articles and interviews, and coverage of local culture, arts and entertainment, along with a calendar of events.
Pennybacker praised the Weekly for serving as a "cultural hub" providing an insider view of Hawaii.
"I just have to say I’m really grateful to Laurie," she said.
