Two trains collided Wednesday afternoon at the Dole Plantation in Helemano, injuring five people, including two children from Honolulu and three visitors, according to the Emergency Medical Services Division.
“It was two trains on the same track that ran into each other,” Fire Capt. Terry Seelig said.
Paramedics reported three women, ages 24, 41 and 48, a 3-year-old boy and a 2-month-old boy were injured.
Paramedics took two people to the hospital. Only the 24-year-old woman was reported in serious condition.
The remainder of the injured, including the toddler and infant, suffered minor injuries, EMS reported.
Three were treated at the scene, EMS said.
The crash occurred at 1:44 p.m. at the Dole Plantation, where visitors can tour pineapple fields in small red trains called the Pineapple Express.
EMS temporary District Chief Arnold Paragaso said the trains were traveling 3 to 5 mph.
The 2-mile, 20-minute tour aboard open-air rail cars introduces visitors to the history of pineapple and other crops in Hawaii, passing through working fields with crops in different stages of growth. The tour also shares the story of James Drummond Dole and how he founded his agricultural empire where the Dole Plantation stands today, according to its website.
The 41-year-old woman is a visitor from Richmond, Calif., and the 48-year-old is from Maiden, N.C., Paragaso said.
The children are Honolulu residents, and their parents declined to have them taken to a hospital.
The 24-year-old woman was in the process of moving, so paramedics did not get her home address.
The Dole Plantation and Dole Co. representatives did not return calls to the Star-Advertiser.
