Sataraka, U.S. juniors to play for gold
Honolulu’s Mysha Sataraka was held without a hit for only the second time in the International Softball Federation Junior Women’s World Championship, but the Punahou graduate still helped the U.S. advance to the gold medal game.
Sataraka drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning of a 4-0 win over Japan on Saturday in Brampton, Ontario. The RBI was her 17th in eight tournament games.
The U.S. Junior Women’s National Team remained undefeated in the tournament and will play Australia or Japan today in the gold medal game in the 19-and-under world championship.
Ho falls in quarterfinals in South Africa
North Shore surfer Mason Ho finished tied for fifth place at the ASP Prime Mr Price Pro Ballito at Willard’s Beach, South Africa, after losing in the quarterfinals Saturday.
Ho started the day with a win, edging Brazil’s Filipe Toledo 14.67 to 14.26 in a round-of-16 heat. In the quarterfinals, he fell to Australia’s Mitch Crews 13.84 to 11.07.
Australian Julian Wilson defeated South Africa’s Jordy Smith 18.93 to 16.70 in the final.
Kaiser, Guard to speak at Quarterback Club
Swimmer Linda Kaiser and Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation board member Tim Guard are the featured guest speakers for Monday’s Honolulu Quarterback Club luncheon at the Maple Garden restaurant.
Kaiser is the only woman to swim across all nine Hawaii channels. She has also competed in more than 50 marathons, ultra marathons and triathlons. Guard has completed more than 20 crossings of the Molokai Channel.
Lunch is at 11:30 a.m., followed by the program at noon. The cost is $15 and the public is invited.
