"A Pocket Guide to Hawai’i’s Birds and Their Habitats," by H. Douglas Pratt (Mutual Publishing, $8.95): This fact-packed volume identifies all the birds likely to be seen while walking, hiking or exploring the islands. A total of 156 species are represented in artwork by Pratt and photos by Jack Jeffrey and others. Included are 340 new photographs of birds, plants and habitat.

"Exploring Hanauma Bay," by Susan Scott (University of Hawai’i Press, $16.99): This popular snorkel guide by the Star-Advertiser columnist has been revised and expanded, offering all the information you will need to explore East Oahu’s spectacular nature preserve. Offered are six tours to accommodate a wide range of abilities; information on the geology, biology and history of the bay; safety tips and a helpful list of park dos and don’ts; and more than 250 color photos.

"Na Inoa," by Malcolm Naea Chun (First People’s Productions, $15.95): Add this guide of selected historical Hawaiian personal and proper names to your library of Hawaii reference books. Chun compiled the list after diligently poring over publications from 1847 to 2012. Each listing includes proper diacritical marks, biographical data, the source of the name and variations. Issued in a limited edition of 1,000 copies.

"Hawaiian Herbal Medicine" by June Gutmanis (Island Heritage, $19.95): The new edition of this landmark book relies on extensive research, historical documents and interviews with Native Hawaiian experts. Gutmanis provides ancient remedies for ailments ranging from headaches to sore throats, insomnia and insect bites. Included are formulas for mixing remedies and 35 color illustrations of plants.

"A Tribute to Fred Trotter," by Valerie Trotter with Mahealani Harris (Island Heritage, $24.95): A tribute to business leader, rancher and former Campbell Estate trustee Fred Trotter, who died in 2011 at the age of 80. His widow, the author, shares memories of their love story; interviews with his friends and associates are included. A descendent of James Campbell, who built a business empire in Hawaii during the 19th century, Trotter was known for his extensive knowledge of agricultural, water and Native Hawaiian issues.
