Kahuku set itself up for another showdown with Farrington for Beast of the Red East status.
Fifth-ranked Kahuku dispatched Kailua 49-17 on Friday night at the Surfriders’ field behind another strong first half of passing from sophomore quarterback Tuli Wily-Matagi.
The Red Raiders (5-2, 5-0) jumped out to a 21-0 lead after a quarter and had it on cruise control from there. They won their 25th straight game against the Surfriders — Kailua last beat the OIA’s North Shore power in 1988.
"The last couple weeks we started strong. (After) a quarter and a half, we started going flat again," Kahuku coach Reggie Torres said. "So we really got to work on being consistent, start to finish."
Kahuku and Farrington (5-2, 5-0) meet on Thursday at Aloha Stadium.
"It’s always a battle, and it always comes down to us, the last couple years, for the East championship," Torres said. "So we gotta go back tomorrow and start working.
"They’re going to be a tough, formidable team."
Kahuku had its backups in with a few minutes to spare in the third quarter of this one.
Wily-Matagi had three touchdowns through the air before halftime for the second straight game, including two 24-yard scoring strikes to junior receiver Huleia Naeole. Wily-Matagi added a rushing touchdown for a 28-0 lead early in the second quarter.
"It’s our blockers. Our O-line has been doing good … buying us time to get into our routes," Naeole said. "(Tuli) has a strong arm, a real strong arm."
That was plenty enough despite Kahuku going without top running back Soli Afalava (shoulder) for another week. Hiapo McCandless was its lead rusher for the second straight week with 62 yards on nine carries.
Meanwhile, the Red Raiders sacked Kailua quarterbacks nine times.
Kailua sophomore quarterback Noah Auld couldn’t get too comfortable against the Red Raiders pressure. He finished with 215 yards with two touchdowns (one passing, one on a keeper) and was picked once.
The Surfriders (2-5, 2-3) recovered an onside kick to open the second half, trailing 35-7. Auld was knocked out of the game for that series on a sack, but the Surfriders got a 41-yard field goal from Naia Graham, who had a 57-yarder last week.
