The University of Hawaii football team now has a triple option at quarterback.
Taylor Graham has re-entered the competition with an impressive display during Wednesday’s team drills.
Graham had missed the past two games because of a dislocation of his left (non-throwing) shoulder. Through Tuesday, his availability was considered iffy for Saturday’s road game against UNLV.
But in his best workout since the injury, Graham completed throws of varying distances while operating both in the pocket and on rollouts during Wednesday’s two-hour practice.
"Taylor played well," coach Norm Chow said. "We’ll find out how the shoulder reacts."
The Rainbow Warriors are scheduled to practice this morning in Manoa, then depart this afternoon for Las Vegas. There is a walk-through session planned for Friday.
Ikaika Woolsey and Sean Schroeder played quarterback in Graham’s absence.
"We have some decisions to make to give all three guys the reps according to the game plan," said Chow, who doubles as the offensive coordinator. "They all bring different skills to the table."
Chow said Graham, a fourth-year junior, has a strong arm and good pocket presence.
Chow said Schroeder, a fifth-year senior, brings "leadership and energy."
Woolsey, a second-year freshman, is a threat as a passer and scrambler, "but he’s the least experienced of the three," Chow said.
UNLV is ranked No. 1 nationally in passing defense (134.0 yards per game). Hawaii is 36th in passing offense (276.8 yards).
"We have to see what their tendencies are, and react," Chow said.
Jordan Wynn, who coaches the quarterbacks, said the competition has helped the offense.
"Whoever’s the best one is going to emerge," Wynn said. "It can’t hurt to have options."
There might even be a fourth option. Chow said Jeremy Higgins, who has been running the scout offense in practices, also will be included on the 64-player travel roster.
