Rose-colored glasses benefit several breast cancer causes
Government shutdown. Gay marriage rights. With all the battles going on, who wouldn’t want to see the world through rose-colored glasses? Now you can. For Breast Cancer Awareness Month, dozens of brands, from BCBG Max Azria to Vera Bradley, are offering eyewear with pink frames or lenses. Oakley is offering dozens of limited-edition designs benefiting the Young Survival Coalition, a nonprofit network geared toward improving the quality of life of young women affected by breast cancer. Prices are $160 to $190. Oakley, known for its military-grade technology and rugged performance-oriented designs and lenses, will donate $20 for each pair sold.

Bargain rings bring the bling
Sparkly, bold, girly and pink — just a few reasons these bling rings caught my eye. The adjustable rings in an array of colors were on clearance at Pier 1 Imports in Pearl Highlands for a mere 98 cents.

Bright new lips lend a bold attitude
Urban Decay’s Revolution Lipstick has shaken me out of my comfort zone — and I love it! On a recent online shopping binge, I ordered a $22 tube of “Turn On,” described as “rosy pink,” along with lip liner in the same shade. After a week of anticipation, I was disappointed when I first tried it on — it was so much brighter and pinker than it appeared on the website. But the color grew on me, and it made me feel the way it looked: bold, fun and adventurous. The long-lasting, moisturizing lipstick comes in 22 shades at cosmetics counters and urbandecay.com.

Dried plums have addictive possibilities
OK, so these potent morsels aren’t literally pink, but they’re pink by association. Hoshi ume, a dried, slightly sweetened snack version of pickled Japanese plum, or ume, is not only related to the pink plum blossom; it comes in a pretty pink package. But here’s what’s important: Hoshi ume has the addictive salty-tartness, a la li hing mui, that local palates love, tempered by the plummy sweetness and soft texture of ume. Marukai sells several brands, but your dollar goes farthest with the 4.58-ounce package of Yawaraka Hoshi Ume for $6.99. (It’s regularly on sale; I got my bag for $5.99.) Visit Marukai Wholesale Mart in Kalihi (845-5051) or Marukai Marketplace at Ward Farmers Market (593-9888).

Beauty products support the cause
Do your skin a favor while contributing to the cause of breast cancer awareness. Boscia is offering a special-edition pink bottle of its Tsubaki Beauty Oil ($46), an anti-aging blend of cold-pressed tsubaki (camellia) oil and wakame (sea kelp) for protection against free radical damage. For each bottle purchased, 20 percent of the proceeds is given to The Rose, a charity committed to treating women with breast cancer. Sephora is also offering “Together in Pink” brush sets ($36) and hair ties ($6) for breast cancer awareness. Find them at Sephora stores or online at www.sephora.com
