The University of Hawaii football team has an agenda.
It’s six pages.
"This is a long trip," said coach Norm Chow, whose Rainbow Warriors departed Thursday afternoon for a two-game, 10-day road trip.
Chow’s preference is for the Warriors to return to Honolulu between consecutive road games. But with trips to Utah State on Saturday in Logan, Utah, and to Navy on Nov. 9 in Annapolis, Md., it made more sense for the Warriors to remain on the mainland.
They will stay in Salt Lake City from Sunday through Wednesday morning before heading east.
Chow said this is the longest road trip in his 40-year coaching career.
For a typical road game, the itinerary can be summarized in two pages. This trip’s expanded itinerary includes tours of landmarks in Washington, D.C.
"This is a business trip," Chow said, "but it’s also an educational trip."
The travel party includes 64 players, 16 coaches and 24 support members, such as trainers and equipment handlers.
The Mountain West Conference limits travel rosters to 64 players for league games, which would allow UHto expand the list for the nonconference game against Navy. Because of financial constraints, UHwill alter the list only for injury substitutions.
The Warriors usually travel with eight offensive linemen. For this game, backup center Brenden Urban will travel as the ninth blocker. This is Urban’s second season as a UH walk-on after transferring from Adams State.
Urban and starting center Ben Clarke are 2011 graduates of Chatfield High in Littleton, Colo. Urban was on the second unit this summer before being sent to the scout offense when the playing rotation was reduced.
"I’m in my third (college) football season, and I’ve only played scout," Urban said. "I’ve never been on a trip before."
After being assigned to scout team this year, Urban recalled, "Iworked my (butt) off. Iwas in the weight room as much as possible. Iwas getting treatment all the time. Iwas trying to keep my grades up so Icould stay eligible."
Urban, who weighed as much as 305 pounds last year, is now down to 280.
Each practice, Urban went against nose tackle Moses Samia.
"He gives me the best look," Samia said. "He’s a good player."
The coaches noticed, and last week Urban was promoted to the offensive rotation.
On Monday, line coach Chris Naeole handed Urban excused-absence slips, then said:"You’re going."
"That was awesome," Urban said. "Iwas pretty excited. Icalled my dad."
His father will make the eight-hour, 537-mile drive to the Utah State campus.
"It’s good for Brenden," Clarke said. "He works hard all the time. Ithink he deserves it."
