Gov. Neil Abercrombie and University of Hawaii officials announced Friday that $5 from every football ticket sold until game time next week will go to the Filipino Community Center’s typhoon disaster relief fund.

Officials said the effort came about as a way to contribute to Typhoon Haiyan relief efforts and boost ticket sales for the Rainbow Warriors’ final home game on Nov. 30 at Aloha Stadium.

Tickets to the UH vs. Army game, which is also military appreciation and senior night at the stadium, are already half-price.

"For the victims in the Philippines, our military and our senior student athletes, we ask you to buy tickets to the Army game and support these worthwhile groups while enjoying our final home football game of the 2013 season," associate athletics director for external affairs John McNamara said at a news conference Friday at the state Capitol.

Abercrombie said anonymous donors came together to help the state and university support typhoon relief efforts because "we just can’t contribute state money without it becoming too complicated."

"When supporters of UH Warriors learned of that, they simply came up and said, ‘Look, we’ll match $5 of every ticket sold of the ticket price up to $20,000,’" the governor said. "We’re hoping that the stadium will be full and people will be able to have the satisfaction of knowing that they’re supporting the team and they’re supporting our brothers and sisters in the Philippines."

Ticket sale donations will go to the Filipino Community Center in Waipahu, which has teamed up with the Consuelo Foundation to send aid to the crippled country. The foundation also has pledged to match funds donated to the center up to $2 million.

Jon Matsuoka, president and chief executive officer of the foundation, said the influx of typhoon relief creates opportunity for renewal in the relatively rural, impoverished areas that were hit.

"It’s an opportunity for us to apply a lot of the things that we already do in terms of (the) psycho-social needs of traumatized families, of housing and livelihoods, and economic development," he said. "So we’re coming together with some very, very committed people in the Philippines, our partners that are credible, that are accountable, and we’re going to be involved in the next few years in rebuilding those areas that have been devastated by Haiyan."

A Filipino Community Center roundtable discussion titled "Philippine Disaster Response and Preparedness," is set for 9 a.m. today at the center in Waipahu. Matsuoka will talk about recovery needsand long-term strategies to rebuild communities. Contact the center at 680-1450.
