Hawaii golfers miss cut in qualifier
A final-round 76 will keep Makawao’s Sam Cyr from playing in next month’s Final Stage qualifying for the 2014 Web.com Tour.
Cyr, who is eligible for the Asian Tour next year, finished the four-day Second Stage on Friday at 4-over-par 292. He was 36th, with the top 20 and ties advancing at the Murrieta, Calif., site.
Tadd Fujikawa closed with a 5-under-par 67 at Gautier, Miss., but tied for 48th and also did not advance. Former Leilehua golfer Kevin Warrick (76-287) was 41st. The top 19 and ties advanced.
Team USA edges Italy in five sets
Team USA, with four players from Hawaii, defeated third-ranked Italy 25-21, 20-25, 22-25, 28-26, 15-13 Friday at the FIVB World Grand Champions Cup at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium.
Micah Christenson (setter) and Erik Shoji (libero) started, with Kawika Shoji playing all five sets as a serving substitute. Kalaheo’s Futi Tavana is also on the team.
The U.S. (2-1) plays Iran today, then Russia.
PacWest awards men’s soccer all-stars
BYU-Hawaii men’s soccer coach Mark Davis earned Co-Coach of the Year honors, and junior Chris Pineda was named Goalkeeper of the Year for the All-PacWest Men’s Soccer Team on Friday.
Hawaii Pacific also landed two players on the first team in senior Felipe Silva and freshman Erik Kemsies. Junior forward Brais Garcia was named the PacWest Newcomer of the Year.
BYUH’s Colby Bauer and Landon Southwick made the second team along with Garcia for HPU.
HPU, BYU-Hawaii compete in GNAC tourney
No. 9 Seattle Pacific defeated the BYU-Hawaii men’s basketball team 86-73 in the first game of the PacWest/GNAC Challenge in Ellensburg, Wash., on Friday night.
Scott Friel led the Seasiders with 17 points, followed by Robbie Mitchell and Cory Lange with 10 points apiece. Cory Hutsen scored a match-high 22 points for the Falcons.
The Seasiders will face Central Washington at 2 p.m. today.
» Justin Long recorded 19 points and six rebounds to lift Hawaii Pacific over host Central Washington 71-64 on Friday night. Farbod Farman finished with 17 points, six rebounds and three blocks. HPU will face Seattle Pacific at noon today.
UH swimmers top Arena Invitational
The University of Hawaii men’s swimming team holds first place out of four teams after Day 2 of the Arena Invitational hosted by UC San Diego on Friday. The women are in third place out of 11 teams.
The UH men placed first in five events, while Rainbow Wahine junior Jasmine Alkhaldi finished first in the 200-yard freestyle.
The invitational concludes today.
» Amund Gizmervik earned bronze in the men’s 3-meter at the Texas Diving Invitational in Austin on Friday. Lauren Hall placed sixth in the women’s 1-meter.
Hawaii Kings take on Auckland
The Hawaii Kings all-star team will take on the Auckland College Rifles from New Zealand in a rugby test match today at 3 p.m. at Kapiolani Park.
The College Rifles are one of the top teams in the Auckland Men’s Premier League. This is the final match of the New Zealand side’s Hawaii tour.
Also, the Lady Harlequins will meet the Lady Kalihi Raiders in a women’s 7s match at 2 p.m.
Admission is free.
