Pearl Harbor legacy will endure
The fraternity of Pearl Harbor survivors who greet visitors at the Arizona Memorial fades with each passing year. These regular volunteers — it’s down to four men now, all in their 90s — engage schoolchildren, tourists and other visitors with their vivid memories of that morning 72 years ago today, when the attack by Japan plunged the United States into World War II.
The dwindling contingent of volunteers keeps Dec. 7, 1941, in the realm of living history for all the generations since. We salute them, and all who served on that infamous day.
Leeward Steelers will represent
A football team from Hawaii is in the Super Bowl — the Pop Warner Super Bowl, that is.
The Leeward Steelers, from the Kailua-Kona area on Hawaii island, earned a trip to Kissimmee, Fla., as one of 64 teams from eight Pop Warner regions that will compete in the weeklong championship that starts today at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. The Steelers are in the "mitey mite" division, for kids ages 7-9 weighing 45-90 pounds.
Head coach Wyatt Nahale told West Hawaii Today that parents and supporters raised $50,000 to fund the travel expenses for the team, which recently completed its third consecutive undefeated season.
"The kids deserve this," Nahale told the newspaper. "The kids being awarded this opportunity for all their hard work is really a blessing."
