Cell chat leads to theft, weapons counts
Talking on a cellphone while driving a moped landed a suspected thief in jail Sunday morning.
Police said they pulled over a 55-year-old man for a traffic violation in the McCully area at about 12:41 a.m. Checks revealed the moped had been stolen.
Officers arrested him on suspicion of unauthorized control of a motor vehicle, second-degree theft, having a prohibited deadly weapon and use of a mobile device while driving, police said.
Kalihi man held on kidnapping charge
A 32-year-old Kalihi man was being held on $100,000 bail after he was charged Saturday night with kidnapping and three counts of terroristic threatening.
Police said Chester Cabang allegedly threatened a woman, 28, and a man, 53, with a dangerous instrument at a Kamehameha IV Road home at 6:07 p.m. Friday. He was arrested at the scene.
Maui police seek help in finding woman
Maui police are asking for the public’s help in locating a female resident who may be suffering from an illness that requires medical attention.
Jean Kini Chang, 59, was last seen at her home in Wailea around 6 p.m. Wednesday. She is about 5 feet 3 inches tall and weighs 134 pounds, She has blond, medium-length hair and green eyes.
Police said she may be driving her white 2005 BMW Z-4 sport coupe convertible. Its license plate reads MSN753.

Kapiolani bar was set on fire, officials say
Police are investigating a fire at a Kapiolani Boulevard karaoke bar early Sunday morning after a fire investigator determined the blaze had been set intentionally.
Fire Department spokesman Capt. Terry Seelig said the fire started at the entrance of Club Geisha House at 1035 Kapiolani Blvd. at about 4 a.m. The fire was brought under control at 4:13 a.m. and extinguished five minutes later.
Damage, confined to the entrance, was estimated at $3,000.
Seelig said the bar was closed and no one was inside when the fire began. Firefighters forced open the door to make sure the fire had not spread and ventilated smoke from the inside of the club.
