Kobayashi to head Koa Anuenue
Jon Kobayashi was named the new president of ‘Ahahui Koa Anuenue, board chairman Al Chee announced Friday in a news release.
Kobayashi was general manager of a hotel in Washington state for seven years and a partner at a Honolulu law firm for 13 years.
He replaces Vince Baldemor, who was named executive director of athletics at Hawaii Pacific University in October.
Established in 1967, Koa Anuenue is the University of Hawaii athletic department’s primary fundraising organization and manages the preferred seating and parking program, athletic booster clubs and annual giving opportunities that benefit all UH-Manoa athletic programs.
Savini named PacWest player of the week
Hawaii Pacific’s Skye Savini was named the PacWest Conference’s women’s basketball player of the week for Dec. 2-8, the conference announced Friday.
The senior forward from Carson, Calif., notched double-doubles to lead the Sea Warriors (7-2, 3-0 PacWest) to wins over Hawaii Hilo and Chaminade.
Savini scored 24 points and pulled down 10 rebounds in Hawaii Pacific’s 70-62 win over Hawaii Hilo on Dec. 4, and followed up with 15 points and 10 boards three nights later as the Sea Warriors downed the Silverswords 81-69.
The Sea Warriors return to action today against Academy of Art in a rematch of last year’s PacWest tournament championship game.
Chaminade tabs Kingsley for men’s soccer
Chaminade has hired Zach Kingsley as its men’s soccer coach, the school announced Friday.
As a player, Kingsley, a Spokane, Wash., native, helped lead the University of Washington to three consecutive Pac-10 titles spanning 1998 through 2000, and later played for the Colorado Rapids in the MLS (2002-07).
Last season, he served as a graduate assistant with the HPU women’s soccer team, assisting coach Gina Brewer with recruiting and administrative duties.
Before coming to Hawaii, Kingsley coached youth teams and helped with camps and clinics in Washington and San Diego.
Young, Klahn headline Challenger tennis
Four players ranked in the world’s top 100, including Americans Donald Young and Bradley Klahn, are in the main draw of the Royal Lahaina Challenger.
The $50,000 U.S. Tennis Association Pro Circuit event is Jan. 19-26 at Royal Lahaina Tennis Ranch.
Taipei’s Yen-Hsun Lu is the top-ranked player in the draw at No. 65. Russia’s Alex Bogomolov is 88th, while Young, who reached the Round of 16 at the 2011 U.S. Open, is 96th and Klahn 97th.
Nebraska’s Jack Sock (102), a 2011 Challenger champion, and Germany’s Mischa Zverev (176), a finalist last year, also have committed to the tournament.
Former Hawaii Pacific All-Americans Jan Tribler and Mika Maatta earned a place in the doubles main draw by capturing the 2013 Triple Crown of Tennis.
The USTA Hawaii Pacific Section will hold a Wild Card Tournament, Jan. 9-12 at the Oahu Club. The winner gets into the 32-man main draw and the runner-up gets a slot in the qualifying draw.
