National women’s team members at gymnastics international meet
Four members of the U.S. women’s national gymnastics team are among the 300 who will compete at the Gymnastics in Paradise international meet today through Sunday at the Aiea District Park gym.
Senior international elite gymnasts Sabrina Vega, Brenna Dowell, Madison Desch and Sarah Finnegan are competing in Saturday’s featured session starting at 3 p.m. All four compete for Great American Gymnastics Express. Finnegan was an alternate for the 2012 Olympic team.
Saturday’s 3 p.m. session also features Junior Olympic Level 10 gymnasts from eight states, including future collegiate gymnasts Shireen Khamedoost (Oregon State), Hannah Hitchcock (Minnesota), Kari Lee (Utah) and Dowell (Oklahoma). Gymnasts will compete in uneven bars, floor exercise, balance beam and vault.
Among the 18 teams are two from Australia, one from Canada and six from Hawaii, including host Hawaiian Island Twisters Gymnastics Club.
The meet opens at 2:30 p.m. today with Level 7 competition. Saturday is Level 9 competition. Sunday features Level 8 at 8:30 a.m. and Levels 5-6 at 1:30 p.m. Daily admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children. Children under 5 are free.

Makahiki games at Turtle Bay
Traditional Hawaiian games such as hukihuki (tug-o-war) and ‘ulu maika (lawn bowling) are among the activities at Saturday’s third Makahiki Kuilima at the Turtle Bay Resort.
The free event runs from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. on the resort’s west-end lawn, with sports competitions and cultural performances. Among the demonstrations will be he’e holua (sled riding).

Sharon’s Ride coming up
The annual Sharon’s Ride, a fundraiser and awareness event for the Epilepsy Foundation of Hawaii, is set for Jan. 26.
The event also includes 5K and 10K runs, and a 1-mile walk, all beginning and ending at Kapiolani Community College. The ride offers 35K, 75K and 100K distances starting at 7 a.m.
The runs start at 7:30 a.m. with the walk at 8:30 a.m.
Entry fees are $25 for the runs and walk, $40 for the bike ride. Applications are available at the Epilepsy Foundation office at 1050 Ala Moana Blvd., Suite 2550, or online at hawaiiepilepsy.com

Archery shoot Saturday
The Aloha State Archery Association is holding its novelty shoot fun day and fundraiser Saturday at the Central Oahu Regional Park archery range.
Registration is from 8 to 9 a.m., with shooting starting at 9:30 a.m. Bows and arrows will be provided to those wishing to learn the sport.
