Bye, bye birdie
Jared Sawada’s last putt as an amateur was one to remember.
Sawada drained a 12-foot birdie putt on Waialae Country Club’s ninth hole to close out his stay in the Sony Open in Hawaii and his career as an amateur.
The Mililani resident was one of three amateurs in the field and finished the tournament at 10-over-par 150 after posting a 72 on Friday.
After shooting 78 in the first round on Thursday, Sawada bogeyed three of his first four holes, then strung together 13 consecutive pars before closing with the birdie.
"It felt good. All the fans watching, all my family supporting me and a big yell at the end. I wish I could have done that every hole, that would have been nice," Sawada said.
Sawada will leave on Jan. 22 for Hua Hin, Thailand, and opens his professional career at an Asian Tour qualifying tournament.
He ended his run as an amateur with four wins in 2013 and his first Sony Open appearance.
"It was a great year and it’s all a learning experience and I’m just going to keep getting better slowly," Sawada said.
Kirk Nelson of Ellair Maui Golf Club shot an 80 on Friday and finished the tournament at 14 over.
Clark exits with elbow pain
Tim Clark, who finished second here the last two times he teed it up, was forced to withdraw after his 13th hole Friday because of elbow pain. He suffers from tendinitis.
Clark opened with a 73 Thursday, going without a birdie for the first time in 17 rounds at Waialae Country Club. He bogeyed three of his first five Friday, then birdied No. 17 and eagled the 18th. He made the turn, but after a bogey at No. 4 he withdrew.
Hahn bags a 2 on a par-5
James Hahn did something at the Waialae Country Club that hasn’t been done in a PGA Tour event here since 1978 — card a 2 on a par-5. Often called a double eagle, it’s actually an albatross, but for Hahn it dropped him from 4 under for the tournament to 7 under on one swing of the club.
He shot 2 over on the back nine for a 5-under 135 for the tournament. Hahn is tied for 16th.
Terry Mauney had the last 2 on a par 5 at the same hole 36 years ago in the Hawaiian Open. Hahn had 191 yards on his second shot, used a 6-iron, and tried to do a chest bump with his caddie when it went in.
