Suspect sought in 2008 assault is in custody
A man wanted in a 2008 sexual assault of a minor on Hawaii island has been arrested.
Mauro Martin Ortiz, 33, formerly of Puna, was brought back to Hilo from Mexico by U.S. marshals. Ortiz was arrested and charged Thursday on a bench warrant accusing him of kidnapping, seven counts of first-degree sexual assault and five counts of third-degree sexual assault. His bail was set at $1 million.
The sexual assault allegedly occurred June 21, 2008, in the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision in Puna.
A grand jury indicted Ortiz on July 10, but police were unable to locate him.
Police appealed to the public for help in finding Ortiz, and he was also featured for five months on the public television show "Hawaii Island’s Most Wanted."
