Hawaii County fire personnel rescued a 38-year-old heavy equipment operator trapped under a large roller compactor that had crashed into a Keauhou house’s carport this afternoon.

Fire officials said the man was operating the compactor when he lost control and it crashed into the house, according to a co-worker.

Fire personnel used webbing to quickly free him as the vehicle was in an unstable position.

The man was alert and awake and complained of pain to his entire body.

He was taken to Medic 12 for treatment, then transported to Kona Community Hospital. The accident occurred at 1:08 p.m. at 79-7079 Highway 180, and the first unit was on scene at 1:28 p.m.
