Wait and see on Kyo-ya’s project
Putting a hotel project on hold doesn’t always fit comfortably under the "good news" heading, but this time might be different.
Kyo-ya Hotels & Resorts LP has decided to postpone closing the Princess Kaiulani hotel for a massive, $500 million redevelopment project. Originally slated to begin in August, the closure has been pushed back to the end of the first quarter of 2015, about a year from now, or longer.
The building trades may not be elated, but the hotel’s employees, who now have more time to prepare for the coming layoffs, certainly must be.
The decision to "carefully review the plans before moving forward" is the first big announcement since the corporate changes at Kyo-ya a few weeks ago. It’s safe to say that as for the company’s plans, all bets are now officially off.
