The Waipahu Marauders were reeling a bit after a nail-biting 1-0 loss to Mililani on Tuesday.
Just 24 hours later, they found strength in a hurler as strong as an oak tree. That would be right-hander Oakland Scanlan, who went six innings to lead the Marauders in a 6-1 win over Aiea on Wednesday at Aiea Recreation Center.
First-year coach Jared Abreu hasn’t changed anything since the retirement of Milton Takenaka.
"He didn’t want to leave with the cupboard bare. We have a good nucleus of (seven) seniors," Abreu said.
Waipahu improved to 2-1 in the tough OIA Red West. Dylan Sugimoto, who took the loss despite throwing a two-hitter on Tuesday, was integral on Wednesday. The leadoff man went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, a run scored and a walk.
"Pitching is my priority, but with this team, my offense and pitching are equally important," Sugimoto said. "I get to lead off and Coach normally gives me the green light."
Sugimoto says nothing has changed, even though he misses his old coach just a bit.
"All the coaches are the same. The same discipline, the same yelling. Practice is the same," he said.
Waipahu scored two unearned runs in the second inning against Aiea’s crafty right-hander, Jansen Kudaishi. The junior went six innings, allowing just two earned runs on seven hits. He fanned four using a sneaky curveball and walked only two.
The Marauders added a run in the fourth inning on a single to left, scoring Sugimoto for a 3-0 lead.
This came even as Kudaishi found his groove. It was Scanlan, who began the game with erratic control, who then found his mark with a consistent change-up — technically, his knuckle curve.
The home team reached Scanlan for a run in the top of the sixth. Jared Uyeda reached base after being hit by a pitch, then scored on a fielder’s choice.
In the bottom of the sixth, Kustin Ho doubled to right and scored on a single by Kobie Russell for a 4-1 lead.
The Marauders added two insurance runs in the seventh. Tyler Enos singled and scored on an infield error, and Grayson Fuentes singled and scored on a sacrifice fly to center. The sinking line drive was speared on a remarkable diving catch by Aiea center fielder Chazdyn Quebral-Acosta. It was his second defensive gem of the game.
After struggling defensively in the preseason — nine errors in two games in Baldwin’s tournament — the Marauders are settling down. Pitching is certainly there with Sugimoto, Scanlan and Anu Kaeka, who retired all three batters in the seventh.
"I try to hit my spots," said Scanlan, a 6-2 junior who also plays football. "I mostly use my fastball and curve and mix in my knuckle-curve when I’m ahead."
Abreu is cautiously optimistic.
"We’re getting through. The West is competitive," Abreu said. "It’s the wild West. Hopefully, we can compete."
Aiea dropped to 0-3 despite the solid pitching. Three errors hurt.
"There’s some bright spots we can build on," coach Ryan Kato said. "We didn’t strike out today and our pitcher had a pretty good game. But we have to execute a little better with our guys on base. I’m glad the effort is there."
