Damage estimated at $24,000 for Waiehu fire

Maui firefighters responded to a brush fire in a former macadamia nut field in Waiehu that caused about $24,000 in damage Friday night.

A resident on Lekeona Loop in Waiehu reported seeing smoke at the top of Malaihi Road at 6:48 p.m.

When firefighters arrived at 7:05 p.m., they saw a 1,200 square-foot structure engulfed in flames on the former Wailuku Agribusiness macadamia nut field. The roof and walls had been collapsed.  The fire was contained to the structure and did not spread to any nearby vegetation, according to Maui Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga.

The fire was under control at 7:50 p.m. and extinguished at 9:36 p.m.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

No one was living in the structure.
