Woman dies after mother accidently drives over her
An 86-year-old woman backing up a sport utility vehicle in an Iwilei parking lot Tuesday ran over her 52-year-old daughter, who later died.
Police said the accident occurred at 4:23 p.m. while the daughter was helping to guide her mother in backing up a 2003 Toyota Highlander.
The daughter was rushed in critical condition to the Queen’s Medical Center, where she later died, police Lt. Robert Towne said.
Police said the vehicle was in the loading zone at Discount Furniture Warehouse at 424 Sumner St.
The accident is the third nontraffic motor vehicle fatality on Oahu this year.
Mail found in car leads to arrest
An off-duty Maui police officer spotted a woman placing mail in a newspaper box in a Kahului residential neighborhood on March 9 and driving away. The officer then looked in the box and found items addressed to various people and mailing addresses.
Wailuku patrol officers investigated, and later during a traffic stop, officers found a pile of mail on the floor of the 41-year-old Haiku woman’s car.
Authorities arrested and charged Davelyn Mahi with six counts of unauthorized possession of confidential personal information and one count of credit card theft. She was released after posting $75,000 bail.
Investigators learned March 12 that Mahi had allegedly used a stolen debit card in another case.
The next day, police located Mahi at the Maui Beach Hotel. She was arrested and charged with second-degree theft, theft of a credit card, fraudulent use of a credit card, unauthorized possession of confidential personal information, two outstanding warrants and three counts of discharge of sureties, with bail totaling $330,000. She is being held at Maui Community Correctional Center.
