Army convoys will add to traffic

The Army at Schofield Barracks has issued traffic and noise notices as it increases its training activities this week.

The 25th Infantry Division’s 2nd Stryker Brigade will be running convoys of vehicles and equipment for shipment to the National Training Center at Fort Irwin in California through Thursday. Each convoy consists of about 50 military vehicles of varying size.

The vehicles will depart in groups of 10. Most of the convoys will be conducted between 8 p.m. and midnight, though there may be some conducted during daylight hours.

Residents in the vicinity of Schofield Barracks may experience periodic increases in noise through 6 a.m. Thursday as a result of scheduled night training. The training consists of small-arms and mortar fire conducted by the 3rd Brigade Combat Team to certify mortar crews.

Reforestation project is set for reserve area

LIHUE » State officials in Hawaii are preparing to begin reforesting 1,000 acres of reserve land on Kauai that burned in 2012.

The Department of Land and Natural Resources will remove 15,000 tons of scorched eucalyptus and pine trees from the Kokee area and put in native and non-invasive plants.

The Garden Island newspaper reports that the restoration is designed to protect the land against flash floods and erosion. Most of the wood will go to Green Energy Team, a nearby facility that turns biomass into energy.

Gov. Neil Abercrombie approved the Kokee Area Restoration and Reforestation project last year in an emergency proclamation. The project aims to ease the damage brought by three fires that burned 3,000 acres around Kokee.

Bail reduced for man who shoved visitor

LIHUE » A judge has reduced a $1 million bail to $100,000 for a man accused of pushing a Japanese visitor off a Kalalau Valley cliff.

The Garden Island reports that bail for Justin Wynn Klein, 38, of Kilauea was cut Tuesday by Judge Kathleen Watanabe in Kauai Circuit Court.

Klein is awaiting a June 25 sentencing after pleading guilty in March to reckless endangerment. He originally was charged with attempted murder.

Klein was accused of throwing the 31-year-old woman off the 15-foot cliff in December 2012. The woman was critically injured and spent 10 days in the hospital.

Klein was a fugitive for four months before turning himself in to police in April 2013.
