Pirtle into bowling hall of fame
John Pirtle, whose pro career included winning the 1994 High Roller Tournament, was inducted into the Oahu Bowling Association Hall of Fame at the association’s annual banquet Sunday at Pearl Country Club.
An item in the Star-Advertiser’s April 11 Out There incorrectly stated that Keith Odette would be inducted. Odette was honored at the banquet for breaking the state and OBA records for bowling the high series of 878. The OBA Hall of Fame was started in 1958.
Lenny wins SUP all-star event
Three-time world champion Kai Lenny of Maui won the Abu Dhabi All-Stars Grand Slam stand-up paddleboard event earlier this week at the Wadi Adventure Park in the United Arab Emirates.
Lenny defeated Florida’s Sean Poynter in the surf event, needing an 8.5 on the final wave to pull out the victory. Hawaii’s Mo Freitas advanced to the semifinals of the World Championship Tour stop, losing to Poynter in the semifinals to share equal third.
Hawaii’s Zane Schweitzer lost in the quarterfinals to Poynter to share fifth, along with Hawaii’s Kody Kerbox. Also competing from Hawaii were Connor Baxter (ninth), Bernd Roediger (17th), and Noa Ginella (26th).
Kaichi dominates table tennis event
Alan Kaichi, Hawaii’s top-rated USATT player, won three divisions at the Big Island Table Tennis Tournament this month at the Waimea Community Center. Kaichi dropped just one game in 19 singles matches, winning the senior, super round robin and elite open divisions against competitors from Hawaii, California, Alaska and the Philippines.
