Mueller takes lead at Mid-Pacific Open
Jesse Mueller shot a 4-under 68 to move into the lead after Saturday’s third round of the Mid-Pacific Open at Mid-Pacific Country Club.
Mueller was the only player to shoot under par in the third round and leads at 209, three strokes ahead of Nick Mason. Eric Meichtry is third at 215.
Casey Nakama won the senior professional division, beating Stan Souza in an 18-hole playoff. Nakama earned $2,800.
In the championship flight, Punahou teammates Kyle Suppa and P.J. Samiere are tied for the lead at 4-over 220. The professional and championship flights will tee off at 6:50 a.m. for the final round Sunday.
Northridge beats Hawaii in water polo
Cal State Northridge beat the Hawaii water polo team 6-5 in Saturday’s semifinals of the Big West tournament in Long Beach, Calif.
The Matadors (23-8) scored twice in the fourth quarter to break a 4-4 tie. Mirella Coutino scored for Hawaii (18-10) with two minutes left to cut the deficit to 6-5. Hawaii missed a shot with 30 seconds remaining and will play Long Beach State in Sunday’s third-place match.
UC Irvine eliminates Hawaii in tennis
UC Irvine won the final three singles matches to beat Hawaii 4-3 in Saturday’s semifinals of the Big West women’s tennis championships at Indian Wells, Calif.
Irvine’s Marivick Mamiit beat Xenia Suworowa 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 singles to clinch the win. Hawaii finishes the season 11-9.
Hawaii Pacific softball sweeps Hilo
The Hawaii Pacific softball team swept Hawaii Hilo 4-1 and 15-3 in a Pacific West Conference doubleheader on Saturday at Okita Field.
HPU won its final five games to finish the season 21-22 overall and 19-13 in the conference. Hilo dropped to 20-20 and 13-14.
Football official at Quarterback Club
Matt Sumstine, coordinator of football officials for the Hawaii High School Athletic Association, will speak at Monday’s Honolulu Quarterback Club luncheon. Sumstine is also a college football referee. Also speaking is Sharon Legacy, vice president of the USA Gateball Federation. Lunch starts at 11:30 a.m. at the Maple Garden restaurant.
