The Pacific Peace Forum, set for Friday at the Cathedral of St. Andrew, will feature a screening of "Breaking Bows and Arrows: A Search for Reconciliation and Forgiveness," a documentary set on the island of Bougainville in Papua New Guinea.
The documentary film spotlights a reconciliation ceremony, involving victims and perpetrators, in the aftermath of a decade-long civil war that left the island community bitterly divided.
The event will also include a discussion about the history of the Bougainville Civil War that ended in 1998. Tarcisius Kabutaulaka, a professor at the Center for Pacific Islands Studies at the University of Hawaii, will take part. The documentary won the United Nations Media Peace Award for Best Television for 2002.
Sponsored by St. Andrew’s and the Pacific Justice and Reconciliation Center, the forum will get underway at 6 p.m. and include an awa ceremony and potluck in the Von Holt Room of the cathedral at 229 Queen Emma Square.
