Apartment fire’s starting point is found
The three-alarm fire in an Ewa apartment complex Friday afternoon originated in Building U, unit 3, Fire Department spokesman David Jenkins said.
The cause remains under investigation and may take a week or two, Jenkins said.
Damage to the two affected structures, Buildings T and U, was estimated at $498,000 and $150,000 to their contents.
Fire spread to six of the units. Electricity was cut to both buildings, displacing 22 people — four of them children — from eight units. (A ninth unit was unoccupied.)
The fire broke out just before 1:24 a.m., and a total of 11 fire companies responded.
A 26-year-old man was injured while breaking glass in an attempt to get people out of the burning building.
A pit bull that lived at one of the units received burns and scrapes but managed to escape from the patio it was kept in. The family’s other dog, a Chihuahua, was killed in the fire. The dog was found dead inside the apartment. The family was not at home at the time of the blaze.
