Gillette wins heat at Vans U.S. Open
Hawaii’s Gavin Gillette won his heat in Monday’s opening round of the Vans U.S. Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach, Calif. In 1- to 3-foot surf, Gillette finished his heat with a score of 12.53. Also in his heat was Kiran Jabour, who placed third with a score of 12.27.
Six other Hawaii surfers competed on Monday. Keanu Asing finished second in his heat with a score of 15.67. Ezekiel Lau also placed second in his heat with a score of 14.06. Three Hawaii surfers are scheduled to compete in Tuesday’s first round. The second round will also be held on Tuesday.
MKYBL takes consolation title
The MKYBL team from Hawaii defeated Mount Olympus (Utah) 8-6 to win Monday’s consolation title at the Pony 10U Mustang West Zone Regional in Los Alamitos, Calif. Jeremiah Lono batted 2-for-3 and drove in three runs in the win. Jake Petrus earned the win after giving up no runs in 22⁄3 innings.
