No tsunami from strong earthquake near Micronesia

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said a strong earthquake in the Federated States of Micronesia region near Papua New Guinea did not generate a Pacific-wide tsunami.

The earthquake, with an estimated magnitude of 6.6, struck at 2:22 p.m. Hawaii time at a depth of about 8 miles, the United States Geological Survey said.

It was centered about 212 miles north northwest of Lorengaur, Papua New Guinea and 709 miles north of Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.

The warning center said that based on all available data, a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no threat to Hawaii.
