The Democratic Party of Hawaii canceled post-election unity rallies on neighbor islands, but as of Thursday still planned to hold its Oahu event as a pair of tropical storms threatened to bring heavy rain and high winds to all islands for the next few days.
Storm preparations prompted Democrats to cancel their traditional election eve rally Friday night at Mooheau Bandstand in Hilo.
But the traditional Unity Breakfast for Oahu Democrats is scheduled to go on Sunday morning at the Dole Cannery ballrooms.
Sunday afternoon and evening events on Hawaii island and Maui, respectively, were canceled, as was a Monday evening unity event on Kauai.
"The event committee decided that we want to deal with the impending emergency situation proactively, in order to allow the candidates and their supporters, as well as other involved groups and agencies sufficient lead time to change their plans," Barbara Robeson, Kauai Democratic Party chairwoman, said in a statement. "We regret cancelling the Unity Event, but the safety of our members and candidates is paramount."
Meanwhile the Hawaii Republican Party plans to carry on with its Saturday "get out the vote" drive at party headquarters on Kapiolani Boulevard.
"We are monitoring the storm closely, but, as of now, there have been no announced closures or delays for polling places on Saturday," GOP party officials said in an email to members. "Therefore, it is important we are prepared to coordinate a comprehensive get-out-the-vote effort.
"Pending weather, can you spare a few hours on Saturday to help our Republican candidates by volunteering at our HQ?"
A party official said there were events planned for Sunday, but details were not being released at the time.
