"Hawai‘i’s Animals and Wildlife," edited by H. Douglas Pratt (Mutual Publishing, $13.95): The latest addition to the ornithologist’s books about Hawaii’s wildlife categorizes birds according to habitat, such as water, suburbs, open country or forest. The book includes sections on sea life, mammals, reptiles and amphibians.

"The French House: An American Family, a Ruined Maison, and the Village that Restored Them All," by Don Wallace (Sourcebooks, $14.99): The real-life story of a New York writer and his wife, who now live in Hawaii, who spent decades restoring a dilapidated cottage on a French island. The project involved interactions with colorful island residents and became a journey of self-discovery.

"Fire Bone! A Maverick Guide to a Life in Journalism," by Robert W. Bone (self-published, $16.95): The longtime Honolulu Advertiser reporter brings the heyday of newspaper journalism to life in this memoir. Bone visits international locales and interviews VIPs, becoming the author of the popular "Maverick" travel books along the way.

"‘Ike Ulana Lau Hala: The Vitality and Vibrancy of Lau Hala Weaving Traditions in Hawai‘i," edited by Lia O’Neill M.A. Keawe, Marsha MacDowell and C. Kurt Dewhurst (University of Hawai‘i Press, $16): This collection of essays and photos related to lau hala weaving aims to focus attention on the traditional craft. Chapters cover the significance of the hala plant in Hawaiian culture, old photographs of woven items and interviews with weavers.

"How Hawai‘i Changed America: The Campaign for Equal Treatment of Japanese Americans in the War Against Japan," by Tom Coffman (self-published, $19.95): The author tells the story of the Council for Interracial Unity, a group that formed two years before the Pearl Harbor attack and helped prevent the mass internment of the islands’ Japanese-Americans. The book’s topics include the efforts of the committee before and after Dec. 7, 1941.

"The Journey of the Northern Seal," by Ilona Hemperly (self-published, $12): The author, a North Shore resident, produced this children’s book about a northern fur seal that got off track and washed up at Rocky Point on Oahu’s North Shore in 2012. Hemperly also did the illustrations.
