Man wielding sword, pellet rifle arrested
Police charged a 48-year-old Wailuku man with terroristic threatening after he allegedly waved a sword and pellet rifle and threatened to kill police officers and others at a Maui residence.
James Fairbanks was charged with three counts of first-degree terroristic threatening, abuse of a family/household member and resisting arrest and on Friday was being held in lieu of $18,000 bail.
At about 7:32 p.m. Thursday, police responded to an abuse call. When officers arrived, Fairbanks went to his room and refused to come out.
Police said Fairbanks brandished what appeared to be a sword and pellet rifle and challenged officers to enter his room. He also made several threats to kill the officers and others at the residence, according to a news release issued by the Maui Police Department.
Crisis negotiators arrived on scene and brought the situation to a peaceful resolution, police said.
SOS message in the sand leads to rescue
Quick-thinking witnesses on Kauai helped alert the Coast Guard to a beachgoer in distress Friday by scrawling an SOS message in the sand.
According to the Coast Guard, an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew was on a routine mission when they were notified that a tour helicopter had seen "S.O.S." written in the sand at Hanakapiai Beach.
The crew searched area waters and found a man who had been pulled off the shore by a rip current. They lowered a rescue basket to the man and transported him to Lihue Airport, where he was evaluated by waiting paramedics.
Police nab alleged attempted car thief
Police arrested a 26-year-old man for allegedly attempting to steal several vehicles from an auto dealership in Waimalu.
The incident occurred at about 9:35 a.m. Thursday. Eight hours later, police arrested the suspect along Lagoon Drive near Keehi Lagoon.
He was arrested on suspicion of four counts of unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle and contempt.
Man arrested after alleged attack
Police arrested a 35-year-old man after he allegedly choked a woman in Salt Lake.
At about 11:15 p.m. Wednesday, the suspect and the victim, 33, were arguing while in a vehicle. The argument escalated when the man used his arm to choke the woman.
The following morning, police arrested the suspect on suspicion of abuse of a household member.
