Coach, young paddlers rescued off Waikiki
Firefighters plucked five boys from the ocean Saturday morning after their canoe overturned in the surf off Waikiki.
Firefighters were called at 7:23 a.m. after three canoes flipped over near Kaisers surf spot, several hundred yards off Fort DeRussy Beach Park, said Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Kendall Ching.
Paddlers were able to right two of the canoes, but the six teens in the third canoe and their coach, who is in his 50s, couldn’t right their vessel, Ching said.
Firefighters picked up five of the boys by helicopter, while the sixth teen swam to shore and the coach was picked up by a nearby boat.
Ching said firefighters wrapped up the rescue at 9:20 a.m. No one was hurt.
Attempted-murder suspect still in custody
A 19-year-old man remained in police custody Saturday pending an attempted-murder charge in connection with an attack on a 21-year-old man in McCully.
Police said the suspect attacked the victim with a weapon at about 3:30 a.m. Friday and caused serious injuries. The victim was taken to the hospital in serious condition, but improved to stable condition.
Police arrested the suspect on Hausten Street at 7:18 a.m. Friday for investigation of second-degree attempted murder and second-degree theft.
Prosecutors have until Sunday morning to charge the suspect or he will be released.
