Kauai police seek information about 2 crashes

Kauai police continue to investigate two major traffic crashes that occurred last week.

The first crash occurred in Lihue about 6:30 a.m. Jan. 27 at  Ahukini Road and Kuhio Highway in Lihue.

According to police, a Nissan pickup truck was making a left turn from southbound Kuhio Highway onto Ahukini, when it was struck by a moped traveling north on the highway.

The 23-year-old male operator of the moped and his female passenger, age 20, were treated for their injuries at Wilcox Hospital. The female passenger has since been released and the driver remains in stable condition. The 58-year-male driver of the pickup did not report any injuries, police said

About 8 a.m. Jan. 28, a two-car crash resulted in critical injuries to a 28-year-old woman in Kipu when an eastbound Ford Ranger truck crossed the center line of Kaumualii Highway and broadsided the passenger side of an oncoming Chevy Spark, which swerved to avoid the truck, police said. The female passenger of the Chevy was taken to Wilcox Hospital and was then medivaced to the Queen’s Medical Center, where she remains in stable condition. The 44-year-old male driver of the Ford Ranger was transported to Wilcox Hospital in stable condition and has since been released. The male operator of the Chevy did not report injuries.
