Woman to be sentenced in death of girl in 2011 traffic crash

A 20-year-old woman will be sentenced May 6 after pleading no contest to man-slaughter and first-degree negligent injury charges stemming from a fatal 2011 crash on Kauai.

A 16-year-old girl was killed when Brittney L. Kane lost control of her car on Kuhio Highway north of the Wai-lua Golf Course entrance.

Kane made the plea Monday before Kauai Circuit Judge Kathleen Wata-nabe, according to a Kauai County news release.

Kane was 16 at the time of the crash, but the Family Court waived jurisdiction and she was to be tried as an adult.

Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Melinda K. Mendes said Kane was speeding and racing in a red 1997 Pontiac Grand Am sedan on Sept. 11, 2011, while under the influence of alcohol.

Kane veered off the road and the vehicle struck a tree, Mendes said.

Nahele Kapua, a passenger in Kane’s car, was killed. Kane and another passenger, a 15-year-old girl, were injured.

According to the news release, Kane had a blood-alcohol content of 0.153, well above the 0.08 legal threshold for drunken driving.
