Victim of apparent drowning is identified
The city Medical Examiner’s Office said Monday the 23-year-old Hauula man who apparently drowned Friday while snorkeling off Kahuku was identified as Nuhi Kahele.
An autopsy will be conducted to determine cause of death.
Ocean Safety, Honolulu Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services crews responded to the 1:45 p.m. incident, which occurred in the sea off the seventh hole of the Kahuku Golf Course.
The snorkeler was taken in critical condition to a hospital, where he died.
Alleged arson sparked by landlord dispute
Police have started an arson investigation after fire inspectors determined that a blaze in a Wilhelmina Rise home Sunday night was intentionally set during a dispute.
Honolulu Fire Capt. David Jenkins said the house’s occupants had a dispute with the landlord.
The fire caused about $500 in damage to the property and contents, including curtains.
Fire officials received the call about a fire at 9:08 p.m. Sunday, and the fire was already extinguished by the time firefighters arrived at 9:12 p.m., Jenkins said.
Kapolei man arrested in sexual assault
A 54-year-old man was charged Sunday with first-degree attempted sexual assault and first-degree sexual assault in an incident that took place in Kapolei.
Ross H. Torres of Kapolei was arrested less than an hour after the reported incident at 2:18 p.m. Saturday, Honolulu police said. Torres’ bail was set at $50,000.
Police did not explain why the man was charged with sexual assault.
Police said the woman, 40, alleged that Torres held her against her will and tried to sexually assault her.
Vehicle hits woman on freeway onramp
An 18-year-old woman walking on the Punchbowl Street onramp to the westbound side of the H-1 freeway was seriously injured Monday night by a motor vehicle, according to Emergency Medical Services.
Paramedics treated the woman at about 7:10 p.m. and took her in serious condition to a hospital, EMS said.
